West Nile Virus is back in Sacramento

The office of Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, District Four has received the following information from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.  We hope that you find this information helpful.

WEST NILE VIRUS ACTIVITY IS BACK IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY

--Mosquito Sample in South Sacramento Tests Positive

Elk Grove, Calif.—The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) received confirmation today that a mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV).  This mosquito sample is the first one to test positive this year and was collected in the Elder Creek area in South Sacramento County. “Finding the first sample of infected mosquitoes is significant because it is a clear indication that the virus is active and present in our area and that anyone can become infected.” said David Brown, District Manager.  “Residents need to be aware and take proactive measures to protect themselves this summer.” said Brown.  As temperatures rise and days get longer, mosquitoes will continue to be a problem and it very important that the public drain any sources of standing water around their home, dress in long sleeves and pants and protect themselves with an effective repellent especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

As a response to the detection of WNV, the District will increase its mosquito trapping and surveillance in the area to find sources where mosquitoes may be breeding. Ground spraying may also be conducted to rapidly decrease the numbers of adult mosquitoes.

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District provides year round mosquito and vector control services. The main goal for the District is to keep the public healthy by preventing the transmission of diseases and improving the quality of life for residents.

Practice the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention:

DRAIN standing water that may produce mosquitoes.

DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid being outdoors.

DRESS appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outside.

DEFEND yourself by using an effective insect repellent.  Make sure to follow label directions!

DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition.

DISTRICT personnel are also available to address any mosquito problems. Call them at 1-800-429-1022 or visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net
