The Greeks who sailed with Jason in search of the Golden Fleece were called "Argonauts", and so were the goldseekers who flocked to California after 1848.  They came west to find gold, then return home with their riches.  But mining was hard, unrewarding work for most, bent over a shovel or pan in broiling sun, standing for hours in icy water, and finding only enough gold to survive another day.

Almost everyone who came to California tried mining in those early years.  A brief experience satisfied all but the gamblers, the incurably optimistic, and the lucky ones who stuck it rich.  Discouraged ex-miners began drifting in from the gold fields looking for other sources of quick wealth.  Men willing to work for others found wages high in a time of labor shortages, but not all wanted to give up the independence they had enjoyed as miners.  Some preferred to go into business for themselves.

Entrepreneurs discovered many possibilities for making a profit in gold rush California.  They stayed in the Mother Lode and established businesses there, becoming successful merchants and tradesmen supplying the needs of the mining regions, or they moved to the cities booming with new-found wealth.  The Studebakers, Strausses, and Ghirardellis; the Fleishhackers and Zellerbachs--all started businesses which ranked among the mercantile successes of the gold rush veterans.  Argonaut Village recognizes the pioneer businessmen who dug for gold in their own ways while providing goods and services to those who still stood knee-deep in Sierra streams.
